Bellmont Partners proudly helped CREATE producers Public Art Saint Paul promote this unique and participatory piece of community artwork, which featured more than 2,000 participants, 400 volunteers and a half-mile-long table in the middle of St. Paul’s Victoria Street.
Sunday’s endeavor was far from your average block party – it was an exercise in community engagement that drew inspiration and materiel from the Frogtown neighborhood. From the locally grown produce to the handmade paper placemats, crafted from urban weeds and grasses, CREATE served as a clarion call for conversation and action in support of food justice, healthy eating and cross-cultural communication.
CREATE: The Community Meal received compelling media attention, including preview and same-day coverage on all four local television stations, advance coverage in nearly every local print outlet, including both major dailies, City Pages and The Minnesota Daily, just to name a few. Commentary pieces appeared in both the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press, and a live segment aired on FOX 9 Morning News the day before CREATE.
Prominent national attention from The Huffington Post (which heralded St. Paul as “leading the nation in the art of food justice”), sustainable food blog Civil Eats and online urban-issues magazine Urbanful added to the growing national buzz, and more coverage is still anticipated.
But the highlight of the day for the Bellmont Partners team was taking a few minutes to enjoy the meal itself – in the company of St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, who served as a table host for CREATE.
Now that’s what we call enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor.
